Description:
In early 2012, a bill to reform Argentina’s Civil and Commercial Codes was introduced in the National Congress, including a provision to regulate ‘surrogate motherhood’. The inclusion of this article sparked public debate and sharp controversy, particularly due to the intersection of money and the body. Using a qualitative approach, this research examines how the various actors involved in the public debate—jurists, legislators, doctors, prospective parents, journalists, political activists, and public officials—interpreted the monetary transactions involved in such arrangements. The study aims to challenge simplified definitions of economic life that reduce the complex interplay between money, the body, and affect to a dichotomous framework that seeks to separate the economy from other domains of social activity.
